Data visualization often boils down to data types. Categories, numbers, and dates are of course table stakes (pun intended), but no tool is complete without also showing you where the action is. So we’re excited to launch geospatial support in Ridge AI!
Global power plants by fuel type and capacity
From overview to detail
Consider this map of global power plants, colored by fuel type and sized by capacity. Panning and zooming allow us to go from overview to detail, while Ridge’s optimized cross-filtering allows us to isolate specific fuel categories and link across plots, examining how different power sources have developed across the world.
Maps aren’t the only answer
But not all geospatial data requires a projected map. Sometimes a good, old fashioned bar chart can better support comparison, whereas other times a more abstract view, such as a cartogram, provides needed focus. Here, a tile grid of states helps maintain geographic context – without biasing value perception due to varying state sizes and shapes.

Live data on an interactive globe
Next, we can visualize data pulled from the USGS’ live stream of earthquake data, showing where, when, and how strong recent quakes are. We support varied projections, here using an orthographic projection to view an interactive globe. We also provide customizable shape layers, in this case showing country borders and an outline of the globe. As before, panning, zooming, and cross-filtered selections work out of the box.
What’s next
Going forward, we will continue to expand Ridge’s geo support.
